Can the Airport Express base station be used as a single stand alone router for internet access without the use of a computer source? I stay in a dorm room and will not be able to connect a router to anything so I am trying to find the best way to get reliable internet access in my room.

Potentially, yes ... but only if the Express is connected to an Internet source. It does not require a computer to operate. The Express expects to be connected to an Internet modem via an Ethernet cable. An ISP, of course, would need to provide the connection to the Internet.
